Tanzania: Mbowe Will Unveil the Successor of Slaa At Mwanza Meeting Tomorrow
Mwanza — The main opposition party -- Chadema -- is tomorrow expected to name its new secretary general, who will replace Dr Wilibrod Slaa, it was revealed here yesterday.
According to the party's head of information, Mr Tumaini Makene, filling the void post left by Dr Slaa, who quit the party after Chadema picked former Prime Minister Edward Lowassa as its presidential flag-bearer in the October 25 General Election, is one of the agenda for the party's General Assembly which will seat here with effect from tomorrow. Mr Makene said article 7.7.13 of the party's constitution empowered Chadema national chairman to propose and submit to the Central Committee (CC) and then to the General Assembly (GA) names of at most two cadres for the secretary general's post.
"For now it is only Mr Freeman Mbowe (national chairman) who knows names of the cadres he will propose; what are going on in the social media are just speculations," Mr Makene said.
He said members of the CC and the GA would start their meeting here tomorrow. Also high on the agenda of both meetings is the party's strategic plan for the next five years as well as the 2020 General Election. "Members will also debate and approve the party's budget for the next five years," Mr Makene added.
